Over two days, this intensive course delves into best practice in clinical supervision. This will cover getting the most out of supervision from the perspective of the supervisee and supervisor.   • Over two days, this intensive course delves into best practice in clinical supervision. This will cover getting the most out of supervision from the perspective of the supervisee and supervisor. The course includes models of clinical supervision, building effective supervisory relationships, ethical and legal considerations and challenges. Clinical supervision is an essential part of governance and professional development for helping professions.

  • Day 1: Understanding the Foundations of Clinical Supervision

    Introduction to clinical supervision. Defining clinical supervision and the difference between clinical supervision, management supervision, reflective practice and personal therapy. Roles of supervisor and supervisee, responsibilities and importance in professional development.

    Models and approaches to clinical supervision. Developmental, integrative, CBT based (Reflexive model, Tandem model, Newcastle framework).

    Building effective supervisory relationships. Establishing rapport and trust, communication skills and active listening techniques, managing power dynamics and maintaining professional boundaries.

    Ethical and legal considerations in clinical supervision. Addressing confidentiality and ethical dilemmas. Legal responsibilities and liabilities for supervisors and supervisees.

    Day 2: Implementing Best Practices in Clinical Supervision

    Assessment and feedback in supervision. Strategies for evaluating supervisee performance (e.g. video and audio tapes, CTSR, frameworks and measures). Providing constructive feedback and fostering self reflection.

    Peer supervision and group supervision vs individual: pros, cons and guidance.

    Challenges in supervision. Addressing ruptures, giving difficult feedback, addressing biases and fostering culturally competent practices.

    Putting it together: how you and your service can put into practice what you have learned; identifying and problem solving barriers, planning and implementation going forward.

    The course is taught using a combination of lectures, interactive discussions, case studies, role-playing exercises and demonstrations.

  • This course is suitable for mental health professionals (with or without a core training), counsellors, psychotherapists, and individuals interested in increasing their confidence and competence in clinical supervision both from the perspective of supervisee and supervisor.
