This two day intensive course is designed to equip participants with an introduction to knowledge and practical skills in group work. This will enable delegates to create a safe and healing environment for participants.

Day 1: Building Foundations for Effective Therapeutic Groups
Introduction to group work. Purpose, benefits and evidence base. Definitions and objectives. Theoretical foundations including group dynamics, therapeutic factors, stages of group development (forming, storming, norming, performing and adjourning).
Establishing a safe and supportive environment. Creating a safe space, addressing diversity and inclusion, managing conflicts, fostering a supportive and empathic atmosphere.
Promoting inclusivity and participation. Fostering a supportive and non-judgemental atmosphere, encouraging active participating and respecting individual pacing, empowering individuals to share.
Therapeutic interventions. Exploring various therapeutic modalities suitable for group therapy (psychoeducation, CBT). Incorporating mindfulness, art, role playing and other experiential techniques. Balancing structure and flexibility in group planning.
Day 2: Practical Applications
Group facilitation skills. Active listening, emphatic communication. Managing power dynamics and maintaining therapist neutrality. Practicing effective feedback and reflection techniques.
Ethical and legal considerations. Ethical guidelines and legal responsibilities in group work. Understanding confidentiality, informed consent and boundaries in a group setting.
Group endings and evaluations. Strategies for ending therapy groups effectively. Facilitating closure exercises and reflection on group experiences. Evaluating group progress and outcomes. Developing aftercare plans and resources for group members.
Putting it together: how you and your service can put into practice what you have learned; identifying and problem solving barriers, planning and implementation going forward.
The course is taught using a combination of lectures, interactive discussions, case studies, role-playing exercises and demonstrations.

This course is suitable for mental health professionals (with or without a core training), counsellors, psychotherapists, and individuals interested in increasing their confidence and competence in group work.
